Separate Four Types of Healthcare Cost
| Cost | Examples | Planning response |
|---|---|---|
| Routine | Medicines, tests, consultations | Monthly retirement budget |
| Insured events | Eligible hospitalisation | Policy review plus cash-flow bridge |
| Uninsured gaps | Exclusions, deductibles, non-payables | Liquid medical reserve |
| Long-term care | Home support or assisted living | Scenario plan and family discussion |
Why Insurance Is Not the Whole Corpus
A health policy can transfer specified hospitalisation risks, subject to terms, exclusions, waiting periods and claims rules. It does not automatically cover every outpatient expense, home-care need or family travel and support cost.
Keep enough liquid money to handle deposits, reimbursements and costs outside the policy. Review the actual policy wording with a licensed insurance professional.
Build the Reserve in Layers
- Include recurring medical expenses in the monthly budget
- Hold an immediately accessible emergency amount
- Model one major out-of-pocket event
- Discuss longer-term care preferences and property implications
- Keep policies, IDs, nominees and hospital contacts accessible to family
Avoid Double Counting
If healthcare is already included in monthly retirement expenses, do not add the same recurring amount again as a lump-sum reserve. The separate reserve should represent shocks or care needs not already funded.
Review the reserve after diagnoses, premium changes, a move to a new city or a material change in family support.
Turn the Guide Into Your Retirement Numbers
Estimate the corpus, first-year income and long-term withdrawal path, then review how pensions, NPS, liquidity and family needs fit together.
