One Award Creates Several Financial Events
An RSU grant, vest, tax withholding, broker credit, dividend and sale are different events. A broker's gain figure may not match the Indian tax computation because cost basis, payroll treatment, currency conversion and reporting periods can differ.
Create an award-level ledger with grant ID, vest date, units vested, units withheld or sold for tax, payroll value, broker credit and eventual sale details. This is the bridge between payroll, broker and tax-return records.
Vesting and Sale Need Separate Files
| Event | Documents to retain | Question for the CA |
|---|---|---|
| Vest | Award statement, payslip, employer tax working | What value and exchange rate entered salary income? |
| Sale | Trade confirmation, fees, bank receipt | What cost basis and holding period apply? |
| Year end | Broker statement, holdings, dividends | Which foreign-income and asset schedules apply? |
Schedule FA Is a Separate Compliance Question
The Income Tax Department's Schedule FA guidance explains that taxpayers with applicable foreign assets should not use ITR-1 or ITR-4 and provides material on Schedules FA, FSI and TR. Whether a particular award, vested holding, cash balance or brokerage account is reportable depends on residential status and facts.
Do not assume that employer withholding, a foreign broker statement or zero shares at year-end automatically resolves Indian reporting. Give the full ledger and account details to the return preparer.
Tax Should Inform, Not Dictate, Diversification
Salary, career prospects and unvested awards may already depend on the same employer. Vested shares add balance-sheet exposure. Decide an acceptable concentration range by considering goals, liquidity, volatility and employment dependency, then ask the tax professional to model execution choices.
A tax bill can be visible while concentration risk is not. Deferring every sale solely to avoid tax can leave a critical goal dependent on one company.
